How To Get The Many Matthew McConaughey Hairstyles

    by Zheelana Cottam

Everyone knows the name Matthew McConaughey even if they can’t necessarily spell it correctly. It’s almost impossible not to enjoy his films as he always brings his own distinct character and individual appearance to the role. The American actor first started to gain traction back in 1993 after his supporting role in the cult classic Dazed and Confused where he sported a blonde bob and salmon pink jeans. Back in the 2000s McConaughey took over the world of romantic comedies and became an official sex symbol starring as the cocky love interest in films such as How to lose a guy in 10 days (2003), Failure to launch (2006) and Fools Gold (2008) just to name a few.

For a while McConaughey disappeared from the acting world, but thankfully his hiatus was not for long. He blessed us with his memorable supporting roles in movies such as Magic Mike (2012) and The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) where he acted alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. A year later McConaughey received an Academy Award for best actor for his exceptional portrayal of Ron Woodroof in the Dallas Buyers Club (2013). A movie that I recommend to everyone.

McConaughey gained even more commercial success after playing Mickey Pearson, a cannabis tycoon trying to sell his empire, in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen (2019). The film was a hit and featured an array of stars such as Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, and Henry Golding.  It seems the only direction McConaughey’s career is going is up as there have been rumours that the actor may be playing the infamous Harvey Dent (Two Face) in the new Batman movie (coming out March 2022!) starring alongside Robert Patterson.

As with any hairstyle you always have to have the right type of hair to pull off a look perfectly. This means having the correct density, texture, and thickness. This hairstyle is best if you have medium-thick hair with natural waves or soft curls. This will help with that floppy surfer appearance McConaughey is famed for. This style is all about movement, so it would be difficult to achieve this look with straight hair, but it is not impossible. You might just end up looking like a late 00’s Brad Pitt. But there’s nothing wrong with that.

    How To Cut:

You’re going to want to start with your hair pretty grown out, around 3-4 months depending on how fast your hair grows. Ask your barber to texturize the ends of the hair all over. This will create definition and softness. Then go through the hair and add layers between five to six inches to help with texture and to remove the weight from your hair. Keep the layers square and this will give the haircut a more masculine look.

    How To Style:

    • First start off with damp, towel dried hair.
    • Then to get that shine and texture you will need some hair wax. Scoop up a pea-sized amount of our Styling Funk and warm the product up between your fingers. Apply throughout the entirety of the hair making sure to go from root to tip.
    • Get your hairdryer and a diffuser. You will not need a comb/brush as it will destroy the integrity of your curls. Dry your hair on a medium heat and use the diffuser to help maintain your waves. When your hair is 80% dry, scrunch up the ends of your hair to help create that curly texture and volume.
    • Now, scoop up a small amount of our Matte Lava Clay and prep product just like the Styling Funk. Strategically place the product throughout your hair to tame any unruly ends but don’t go overboard because you want the look to look loose and natural
    • Finally go over your hair once more with the hairdryer but put it on your coldest setting to lock in the look.

Grooming Tip: For this style we suggest getting your hair cut every 4-8 weeks to keep things look beachy instead of grizzly. Always ask for a scissor cut and avoid those clippers at all costs.

Hairstyle 2: Short back and sides

If you’re not one for the shaggy look we suggest you try out McConaughey’s shorter hairstyle. The cut is a basic short back and sides with a lot of volume added to the top. The curly texture he has elevates the hairstyle to the next level. This is a great look to pull off if you need to keep your hair short for work or if you’re looking to spruce things up for a big event. It’s classic and timeless and pairs exceptionally well with a suit.

    How To Cut:

For the back and sides of this cut you’re going to want to start at a #2 at the base of the neck and gradually move up into a #3 towards the hairline. The top hair you want to leave is relatively long, and  scissor-cut it at around four to five inches in length and taper it off towards the back of the head. This will be just long enough to get some movement and shape in the hair. Finally neaten up the haircut with some blending and trimming the hair down around the ears.

Using your fingerspush the hairs up on the top of the head and shape your hair the way you want it to look. This will help with volume.
    • Now you will need a hairdryer. Blow dry your hair on a medium heat, aim the hair upwards. Only blow dry your hair till it's half dry and then leave it to air dry.  This will help keep that curly texture on top.
    • Once the hair is dry use your fingers to brush you hair backwards to give ir some direction.
    • Finally, to keep the sides neat and pushed back, add a small scoop of our Matte Lava Clay. Try not to use any of this product on the top hairs or your look will go flat.
